Finally, after 17 months of excessive reading and studying the foundations of Western astrology, I finished Chris Brennan’s Hellenistic Astrology Course and got my Certificate of Completion. Here are my thoughts about studying astrology through this course.
Seeking for Answers
I had been familiar with modern Western astrology to some extent before I enrolled in Brennan’s course. For me, the main reason to take the course was my increasing interest in learning about the premises behind astrological teachings. Why do the houses mean what they mean, what was the original foundation? Are there other reasons for Mars and Saturn being associated with loss and hardship besides their nature? Why do transits seem to work some times and other times not? Satisfying answers to these and many more questions were hard to find.
Discovering a Treasure
In early 2017 I became aware of Chris Brennan’s work through a local astrology Facebook group. In fall of the same year, I got a copy of his book Hellenistic Astrology: The Study of Fate and Fortune. After reading through the first five chapters about the history of Western astrology, I felt that I also wanted to take the course. I had been following Brennan’s Podcast and YouTube channel for a while and was familiar with his well-organized way of teaching. I knew participating in his online course would be hugely beneficial for getting to the bottom of ancient astrology.
Eventually, in spring 2018, I signed up for the course. After browsing through the content and watching the first few video lectures, I quickly realized that there is a great deal to learn about. Of course, I was expecting to get introduced to astrological doctrines and techniques new to me but how much there was of which I had no idea of did indeed surprise me quite a bit!
A Matching Way of Studying
The Hellenistic Astrology Course currently consists of 13 parts. The content is enormous yet well-structured. Detailed theory and practical examples go hand in hand when it comes to the various techniques of ancient astrology. There are no specific times that students need to be available for the course. All material is provided through a private website you get access to once you sign up. This means you can study where and whenever it best fits your schedule. For me, studying through this kind of course which provides such a great amount of flexibility was fitting perfectly my work schedule and overall life situation. Besides, I do learn much easier when studying alone than in a group.
There is also no time limit to finish the course so you can study at your own pace. The course has its private Facebook group to make support and interaction between students available. Chris is also actively answering and commenting on questions asked in the group.
Tracking Progress and Certification
At the end of each part of the course, there is a short multiple-choice quiz. I found those quizzes very helpful because they give you some feedback about your learning progress. There is also a counter which lets you know what’s the percentage of course material you’ve already made it through.
If you complete the course including all of the quizzes and the final written exam at the end of the course, you’ll receive a certificate of completion. Of course, you can also sign up only to get access to the material without having to take the quizzes and the exam.
In conclusion:
Chris Brennan’s Hellenistic Astrology Course is not only teaching methods but illuminates in great detail the premises behind them. If you aim to study and understand the roots of Western astrology then this course is what you are looking for. Once finished you’ll have acquired yourself a proper astrological toolbox.
What’s Next?
I went through the course with great enthusiasm and thank Chris for his well-organized and comprehensive teachings! Now it’s time for me to get some more practical experience in handling my newly acquired astrological tools. And of course, there is also The Professional Astrologer Course waiting for me…
